One of my 2014 goals this year is to read 2 books per month. I used to LOVE reading when I was young; I was totally a book monster! Lately, I’ve been feeling that reading for pleasure has been pushed aside for the past few months (or even, years?!). I have a little Nexus tablet so I know I don’t have an excuse not to read…
I can’t believe how fast the summer is flying by and it’s already middle of August! I apologize for how quiet the blog has been but I actually moved to a new apartment two weeks ago. The process of packing, moving, unpacking, rearranging, and looking for new furniture has been tiring but I am slowly settling in. What I love most about this new apartment is the BEAUTIFUL kitchen with lots of counter space and natural light. Hopefully this means I will cook more!
Are you a fan of Anthony Bourdain? I can’t say I’m a fan of his food because I’ve never tasted anything from his kitchen but his TV shows are awesome. His newest series on CNN, Parts Unknown is my favorite by far. The cinematography is great and I love how he focuses more on how a country’s culture and history affect the cuisine. After watching an episode on Morocco where he couldn’t stop raving about a tagine at little hole-in-the-wall, I did some sleuthing online.
aren’t these purple carrots so pretty?! i got them in my csa produce share this week…but i did not really know what to do with them. i guess i could have eaten them all raw but i was quite ambitious this weekend. i wanted to make gnocchi!
a month or two ago, i tried making gnocchi (with sweet potatoes) for the first time and it was a partial failure. they turned out too doughy and little too soft which probably meant that i didn’t add enough flour. well, after eating leftovers for several meals…gnocchi was the last thing i wanted to make for a while.
are you sick of all the salads i have been posting lately?
i can’t help it…! salads are what i live on during warm summer nights and when it’s still light outside at 8:30. and of course, i need my carbs! i’m not a crouton kind of girl so i went with a crusty baguette from the Med. a seeded baguette (dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar, obviously!) with a fresh salad is the best combo!
i am addicted to this kale and avocado combo. kale is massaged (yes, massaged) with a tangy lemon and olive oil dressing. cucumbers, carrots, and thin-sliced red onions bring some crunch and perfectly ripe avocados provide creaminess and richness. perfection!
once upon a time, i made my own pizza dough. it was deliciously chewy and yeasty…but it essentially felt like babysitting a toddler for an entire day. naturally a worrywart, i checked up on it incessantly and was absolutely paranoid.
then i got my hands onto trader joe’s pizza dough and i was happy for a while until i realized that on some days, i just want pizza IMMEDIATELY. i don’t have time to go to trader joes!! on sunday, i stumbled upon a bookmarked flatbread recipe from Shutterbean and just decided to make a “pizza” out of it. spontaneity!
